About the work
Between 1919 and 1923 Dix created various formulations of the theme 'Sailor and Girl', which included three oil paintings. Farewell to Hamburg marks the transition from Dix's Expressionist and Dadaist experiments to New Objective painting. It was painted after a short stay in the port city in the summer of 1921. The composition is based on the collage principle of Dadaism. A beach, a pier with a lighthouse and a ship leaving symbolise the sailor's farewell to the port city of Hamburg. Above this floats a bust portrait of the sailor with a flagged globe as a shirt button. In the lower left corner he reproduces his well-known interiors in which prostitution and rape take place.
