Artist
Johann Christian Klengel 1751 – 1824
About the work
At the time when the Dresden landscape painter Johann Christian Klengel created this sheet in 1775, his application for a travel permit to Italy to further his studies had been rejected once again. Although he had meantime become a member of the Dresden art academy, he was forced when depicting southern landscapes to rely for the time being on the knowledge gained from his studies of older models. The sheet recalls Klengel’s teacher, the famous Dresden court artist Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich, also called Dietricy. He too had to refer for his landscape to older, mainly Dutch artists.
