About the work
The Pietà is the only painting with a religious motif before the First World War and occupies a key position within this group of works. While the late work focuses on an allegorical examination of personal experience and the recent past, the early religious works are characterised by an experimental, open approach. As a young man, Dix felt his way into primal themes of humanity: Suffering, pain and death, represented by the Passion of Christ, he places on the open street in front of a blood-red-brown brick wall.
