About the work
Christine Stephan-Brosch photographed Otto Dix (1891-1969) in 1964, shortly before she received her diploma. The artist’s penetrating gaze is fixed on his interlocutor, with whom he is engrossed in conversation. Christine Stephan-Brosch uses the depth of field to direct the focus entirely onto Dix’s face. The photographer has succeeded in communicating immediate proximity to the action and, at the same time, detachment.
