Artist
Käthe Kollwitz 1867 – 1945
About the work
The pregnant woman standing, wrapped in a wide woollen shawl with a checked pattern, appears sluggish and exhausted; at the same time, the portrait conveys a strong sense of three-dimensionality and physical presence. Kollwitz renders the materiality convincingly: the drapery lies tightly around the body, and the fringes of the shawl are finely detailed. She achieves this through the use of various etching techniques. In addition to line etching, drypoint and aquatint, she uses the vernis mou process: by printing textured paper onto a soft ground, she achieves a distinctive textural quality.
