About the work
In the 1930s, Dix increasingly took his students to the Dresden Gemäldegalerie to study Renaissance artists with them. It is possible that the painting is a study that Dix created later in the course of his work with his own students. The portrait with the lowered gaze seems like a momentary snapshot of a model during the break between the actual modeling sessions. Even though he signed the work, its character is marked by an unusual lightness.
