Carl Robert Kummer 1810 – 1889
About the work
Thanks to a scholarship he received from the art academy, Kummer was able to take a trip to Italy in 1832, his aim being to gain comprehensive impressions in the art-laden atmosphere of the Eternal City and to exchange ideas with the numerous artists there. In his drawings Kummer strove to capture the unique beauty of the art capital on the river Tiber, with the distant dome of St Peter’s forming a point of orientation. Rome and Italy continued to be Kummer’s artistic homeland of preference for many years.
