Artist
Friedrich Otto Georgi 1819 – 1874
About the work
‘Jerusalem, seen from the Mount of Olives, from life’, is how Bodemar describes the landscape view, which entered the collection in 1907. In this exhibition, the cityscape is intended to complement the Portrait of David Leder. In 1842, the painter Georgi took part in an expedition to Egypt and Palestine on behalf of the Prussian government. There he produced numerous studies and sketches, which he developed into much-admired paintings.
In 1945, the painting was severely damaged by water ingress and could not be displayed in the museum again until 2024, following extensive restoration and reframing.
