About the work
This little brush drawing directs our gaze to the rear of a Gothic cemetery chapel, whose trifora or three light window with excessively pointed arches dominates the otherwise largely unadorned section of wall. The sheet became part of the holdings of the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz as early as 1950. The ascription made at the time to the important landscape painter Carl Blechen however must be reconsidered in light of the current state of knowledge and research. The pictorial composition and brushwork are incompatible with the Berlin artist’s characteristic style. A draughtsman from the southern German region might be considered as its author.
