Emil Mund 1884 – 1954
About the work
With his bust of Otto Theodor Wolfgang Stein, the sculptor Emil Mund has created a striking portrait. The facial features are rendered in rich detail and with great realism, whilst the narrow shoulders merge into a barely sculpted, plinth-like base. The work is carved from cedar wood. Mund had been living in Chemnitz since 1924 and became a member of the Kunsthütte zu Chemnitz association in 1931. He was closely integrated into the Chemnitz artists’ network and presumably met Stein there. With the political upheaval of 1933, Mund took on the role of art curator within the association.
