About the work
Markus Draper lives in Berlin and is a renowned specialist on the theme of building and failing, on architecture and psyche. This early photographic documentation shows a walk-in installation entitled Skulpturenkino: House of Darkness. It was the artist’s first multimedia installation. The model is a reconstruction of the house in Gloucester, England, where two mass murderers tortured and abused women and children.
The artist is the son of an architect and originally comes from Görlitz. He is interested not so much in the horror as in the mental components of buildings. Here the nailed-up space points to the darkest side of the human soul, while at the same time showing the limits of what is depictable when it comes to human cruelty. The light in the fireplace comes from a TV showing the fire of the house.
