About the work
Around 1900, wallpapers and fabrics were imitating not only the motifs, but also the materiality typical of 18th century silk velvets produced in Lyon. Baroque floral bouquets and classicist gryphons were regarded as the essence of French ornamental art. What is more, innovations in weaving technology at the time made it possible to produce new colours and surfaces. Flock wallpapers, like the one from Zuber et Cie on show here, were widely imitated. Wool dust or flock on areas coloured with distemper was cheap in terms of production, while the end-product gave the impression of being valuable velvet.
