About the work
Zuber & Cie, a wallpaper manufacturer of long-standing, had been producing since 1797 in Rixheim in Alsace. To this day, they still produce both machine-printed wallpapers and masterly hand-printed ones using original wooden stamps. Jean Zuber made a name for himself worldwide as of 1804 with large-format panorama wallpapers, such as Vue de Suisse (View of Switzerland). Those large formats were not suitable for the local model collection however. The wallpaper on show here, Golden Pheasant & Wisteria, hand-printed in 32 colours, gives some impression of the flamboyant arrangements on those luxurious wall decorations.
