About the work
The early works by John Finneran are characterised by a serial depiction of trivial everyday items. Usually socks appear in pairs, but these are all single ones. There is something quite comic-like about these baggy items. In different arrangements and painted with swift brushstrokes against a vibrant dark background, the objects seem animated, as if worn by someone. Finneran has chosen sheets of aluminium which are held together by rivets as his carrier. Painting on copper was already widespread in Europe in the 16th century. It enabled artists to achieve a shimmering translucent colourfulness and brilliance. Here however, everything is covered in a thick layer of paint and the unusual picture carrier is only hinted at in a few places.
