About the work
One of the most popular motifs of the WW were cup or bell-shaped flower motifs, which turn up in ever new variations. These motifs, reduced and with clear contours and strong colour contrasts, gave rise to a defining new pan-European formal idiom. With Mecca, Artur Berger designed one of the first motifs of this kind. Flat motifs that can be infinitely expanded in two-dimensions were used in the design of upholstery fabrics, carpets and wallpapers. In some cases, whole rooms were fitted out from carpet to ceiling with the same pattern.
