About the work
In this ideal landscape various ensembles of Roman buildings are freely combined. As regards the drawing technique and composition, it is totally in the classical tradition of the late 18th century, when the sepia style enjoyed great popularity internationally. The tree in the shade framing the scene directs our gaze to the buildings standing in the dazzling light of the sun. These are drawn with great artistic assurance, whereas the vegetation is somewhat schematic and the figures too large in relation to their surroundings.
