About the work
This is a depiction of the so-called Diana Temple in Nîmes, the nymphaeum built by the Romans in the first post-Christian century and then excavated and refurbished as of 1745. The rendering is charmingly colourful and so archaeologically faithful that a reconstruction of the ruin might well be based on it. The precise reproduction of the architecture, and the lighting, make one think of a draughtsman familiar with the principles of recording architecture, and most likely located in France.
