The massive dimensions of the steeply rising cliff formation, made up of horizontal layers of rock, become all the more striking when compared with the small size of the two ramblers resting at its base. Artists in Dresden cultivated a pronounced interest in geology and conspicuous rock formations. The names Caspar David Friedrich and Carl Gustav Carus could well stand for this leaning. Not only was the precise rendering of nature of concern to them, the reference to human existence was of even greater importance.
