About the work
Milly Steger was not permitted to study at the Dusseldorf art academy because she was a woman. Instead she attended lessons at Karl Janssen’s private studio and later in her artistic career took her cue from the artist Georg Kolbe. Her expressionistic work, mainly of female figures, is inspired by the vigorous gestures of modern dance. In 1910 Karl Ernst Osthaus invited Steger to Hagen to be the city’s sculptress. It was there that she created four colossal female figures for the façade of the municipal theatre, reliefs for the municipal hall and other statues for buildings.
