Artist
Otto Dix 1891 – 1969
About the work
After training as a machine gunner, Otto Dix spent the war years mainly at the front in France and Flanders. Despite the terrible experiences that haunt him throughout his life, he draws a sober balance years later: »The war was a horrible thing, but still something powerful. I could not miss it under any circumstances! You have to have seen man in this unleashed state to know anything about man.« Important documents of his war experiences are hundreds of drawings and numerous gouaches with harrowing depictions of battles and battlefields, of prisoners, the wounded and the dead.
