About the work
The artist duo M+M concentrate on film and the narrative structures of the moving image. This large photograph breaks down the individual images from a news broadcast. The TV format requires 25 images per second. Thus the length of the report determines the number of individual images. The sequences correspond to the colours of the take and the rhythm of the editing. What we see is a report broadcast on 27 August 2018 during the current events programme Mittagsmagazin. At the time, dramatic images from Chemnitz had captured international headlines for a brief period. Following a murder, hundreds of right-wing extremists and supporters of the AfD (Alternative for Germany) party paraded through the city agitating against foreigners. Three years previously, the war in Syria had given rise to a huge surge of refugees that constituted a significant challenge for the country. The protests represent one of the saddest high points of both right-wing calls for violence and of state loss of control.
