Artist
Käthe Kollwitz 1867 – 1945
About the work
This powerful and moving depiction portrays the despair of a mother who does not have enough bread to feed her two starving children.
The print appeared in 1924 as part of a series of seven lithographs by Otto Dix, George Grosz, Heinrich Zille and other artists in the portfolio ‘Hunger’, published by the International Workers’ Aid to mark the 10th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War. The proceeds from the sale were earmarked exclusively for the Artists’ Aid and children’s homes run by the Workers’ Aid.
