About the work
Shortly before the war, the Hamburger Kunstgewerbeschule cooperated with the small wallpaper factory Murck & Co on a collection. The result were wallpapers that had «seemingly innovative nature motifs with a pronounced character”, to quote a journal at the time. The design was by the student known as «Fräulein Grässel” and was printed in four different colour combinations, blue-red-green along with, among others, beige-green-pink.
The student took her cue from her teacher Friedrich Adler, head of the Ornamentation, Nature Studies and Design class. That Munich artist was known for his colourful textile and surface patterns, as well as for his furnishings and metal objects.
