About the work
The short story »Le chef-d'œuvre inconnu (The Unknown Masterpiece)« by Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850), published in 1831, inspired numerous artists. One of them was Pablo Picasso, who at times made the real-life location of the story his own studio. Picasso did not illustrate the plot of the text, but reflected instead on the ideas it contains about artistic ideals and their failure, as well as about the role women play for men as models or partners.
