Artist
Käthe Kollwitz 1867 – 1945
About the work
Hands play an important role in Käthe Kollwitz’s work. Gestures and the various forms of touch conveyed through the hands convey the emotional content of the images.
In the ink study from around 1890/1891, particular attention is paid to the detail of the hand of a seated woman clutching the back of a chair.
The lithograph from 1920, by contrast, focuses on the woman’s quiet, pensive posture. Her body is slightly bent forward, and with her hand in front of her face and her eyes closed, she appears shielded from her surroundings.
