About the work
Between 1904 and 1908, Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandinsky undertook various trips through Germany, Holland, Tunisia, Italy, and France. They spent the longest continuous period together from May 1906 to June 1907 in Paris and Sèvres. Here, Gabriele Münter visited galleries and exhibitions where the paintings of the Fauves had been the subject of much discussion since 1905. Although she showed great interest in the Fauvist approach to nature, she initially remained committed to the late Impressionist palette knife technique. Using this technique, she created numerous small-format views of both Sèvres and the Parc de Saint Cloud. Standing directly in front of the motif in the landscape, she applied the paint in short strokes with a palette knife onto cardboard or canvas, working in a very impasto style in places so that the paint formed relief-like ridges. In the works, the motif remains clearly recognizable and is characterized by a perspective, firmly structured composition.
