About the work
Ernst Schütz was a successful manufacturer of expensive luxury wallpapers and also held the influential post of first chairman of the association of wallpaper manufacturers, Verein deutscher Tapetenfabrikanten, set up in 1889. His participation in the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900 marked the pinnacle of his success, as he was awarded a gold medal. Collaboration with artists such as Richard Riemerschmid was already entered into under his management. In 1906, his company went bankrupt as a result of financial mistakes. His successor kept the company name and worked with successful artists and architects, including Peter Behrens.
