About the work
Between 1942 and 1945 Dix painted three similar self-portraits. What they have in common is the depiction in a white painting smock with brush and palette in his hands, with drapery and a female figure in the background. The artist himself turns his back on the subject in each case and looks out of the picture. In all three works, the painter's eyes lie deeply shadowed in the dark sockets of the aged face. In the Chemnitz Self-Portrait, painted shortly before the call-up to the Volkssturm in February 1945, Dix develops the reclining female nude of the previous year's version into a dancer with a death mask held in front of her face.
