Artist
Georg Heinrich Crola 1804 – 1879
About the work
In 1840 the Dresden artist Georg Heinrich Crola moved to the small romantic town of Ilsenburg in the Harz district, where he remained until his death in 1879. The town of Mansfeld, where this drawing was done, is located in the eastern Harz foothills. Crola is sure to have visited it from Ilsenburg. This view dated 1841 documents the state of the former Mansfeld fortifications at the time. Yet the artist’s attention was also drawn to the picturesque charm of the ruins in the sun-drenched landscape. When perceiving this, Crola may also have had the sublime grandeur of ancient ruins in mind.
