About the work
Born in Nuremberg, the painter and sculptor Werner Knaupp subjected himself to what he describes as ‘extreme experiences of severe physical and psychological suffering, death, and the destruction of human corporeality’ through voluntary physical labour. He then explored these experiences in his art. From 1977 to 1978, he worked at Bayreuth Hospital for Mental, Psychosomatic and Neuropsychiatric Illnesses. This drawing depicts his experiences there and the fear figure he encountered.
