Artist
Edmund Hottenroth 1804 – 1889
About the work
Edmund Hottenroth made his way to the Gulf of Naples and to Sicily several times. The watercolour Taormina shows the remains of an ancient building surrounded, indeed almost invaded by nature. The painterly approach exhibits impressionist trends, implying that it was done at a late date, around 1870.
After his death a part of Edmund Hottenroth’s estate went to the famous Caffè Greco still to be found on Via Condotti to this day. It was once a meeting point for German artists in Rome. A total of 40 works by Edmund Hottenroth are on show on the café’s premises.
