Artist
Otto Theodor Wolfgang Stein 1877 – 1958
About the work
A hilly landscape shows a path that winds its way past the buildings and disappears into the distance. The cemetery wall on the right – the title is derived from a letter by the artist – is partially overgrown. A birch tree can be seen on the left of the picture. The sun is setting on the horizon.
The 1929 global economic crisis also had consequences for artists. Stein’s works were prominently featured in exhibitions such as those held in 1930 at Kühl (Dresden), Gerstenberger (Chemnitz) and the Barchfeld Gallery (Leipzig). But his income was dwindling and the artist had no savings.
