Artist
Otto Theodor Wolfgang Stein 1877 – 1958
About the work
The painting depicts a female nude on the beach that occupies almost the entire canvas. Such voluminous female nudes were particularly popular in French art. The woman, draped in cloths, is equally enveloped in the colours of the surrounding pictorial space. Her facial features appear both stylised and portrait-like.
In 1922, a profound emotional crisis made Berlin unbearable for the artist. His patron Max Leder, brother of David Leder, financed a stay for him in Nidden on the secluded Curonian Spit. It was not until February 1923 that he returned to Berlin.
