Otto Dix 1891 – 1969
About the work
In addition to the large portrait paintings, which were mostly commissioned, there were numerous anonymous portraits in the 1920s that Dix executed in watercolour. One of the most impressive works in this context is Meta. Dix portrayed this model twice in watercolour in 1923, dedicating one sheet to the writer Alfred Wedekind. Dix was fascinated by Meta's special facial structure with its protruding chin, bulging lips and pointed nose. Dix always sees a person's inner self reflected in their outer appearance. For this reason, the colourfulness of the watercolours always plays a role in revealing the psyche of the sitter.
