About the work
Just one month after the end of the war, in December 1918, the portfolio ‘Schmidt=Rottluff 9 Holzschnitte’ (Schmidt=Rottluff 9 Woodcuts) was published by Kurt Wolff Verlag in a limited edition of 75 copies. Also known as the ‘Christus-Mappe’ (Christ Portfolio) due to its depictions from the New Testament, the series is an impressive testimony to questions of suffering and humanity. ‘Kiss in Love’ is the only non-religious depiction: the soldier, scarred by his experiences in the war, finds comfort and security in the arms of his wife upon his return home.
