Additional title
Study for the mural »Orpheus and the Animals«
Artist
Otto Dix 1891 – 1969
About the work
During the Nazi era, Dix earned his living primarily with commissioned works. He was supported by numerous patrons. Among them was the Chemnitz family of the entrepreneur Fritz Niescher. Since the garden pavilion of the Niescher family had remained unfinished due to Schaffer's unexpected death, Dix was commissioned with the further design. Unlike Schaffer, Dix decided on a theme from Greek mythology. In preparation, he created more than 100 watercolors and drawings. In addition, he designed seven true-to-scale cartoons for the central motifs - including the sheet of the eagle shown here.
