Artist
Johann Heinrich Troll 1756 – 1824
About the work
In the 1780s and 1790s, Adrian Zingg, together with his students, including Troll, wandered through the districts known as the Saxon and the Bohemian Switzerland so as to draw after nature. The sheet showing a hermitage in the woods bears witness to the painterly attraction of the Saxon landscape. The hermitage appears as if out of nowhere, located by a lake and «built into” a massive rock crevice, with an old monk is approaching it using a walking stick. Surrounded by high deciduous trees, the cliff emerges in a bright light – the light metaphor testifying to the brightness of the place.
