About the work
The Reform Movements around 1900 opened up the art world to women as well. One such woman was Baltic-German Wanda von zur Mühlen, who trained as a painter and pattern designer in Munich under Franz Marc, among others. Around 1912, she lived in Chemnitz, where she participated in the Chemnitz Kunsthütte art association’s exhibitions. This modern-looking wallpaper with a border also dates from that period. After marrying an ardent Nazi supporter, von zur Mühlen worked solely as a painter of landscapes and floral still lifes that appealed to the Nazi regime’s taste.
