About the work
In 1876 Max Langhammer took over his parents’ wallpaper factory and managed the business very successfully, both as home and abroad, until it was sold in 1910. As an entrepreneur, politician and founder of a nationwide trade association for the wallpaper industry, Langhammer was a keen observer of the international wallpaper market. As a result, he collected sample items from factories in France, England, USA, Austria and Switzerland. The fluid forms of French Art Nouveau and the clear contours of the Arts and Crafts Movement were the inspiration behind his collection. By contrast, oak leaves gave expression to a search for a national style.
