Artist
Johann Heinrich Troll 1756 – 1824
About the work
Johann Heinrich Troll, who originated from Winterthur, presents a scene that is not untypical of late 18th century Saxon landscape art – a group of varying wooded hills provide the backdrop for a swiftly flowing river bordered by willows, across which a small wooden bridge leads to a settlement. The typical technique, with which the outlines of the pen-and-ink drawing are coloured in finely nuanced shades of grey with a brush, points to Troll’s teacher, Adrian Zingg. Troll had gone to him in Dresden in 1779 in order to perfect his skills.
