Tapetenfabrik August Schütz, Wurzengegr. 1840Hersteller:in
About the work
August Schütz was a gifted entrepreneur: no sooner had the railway line between Leipzig and Dresden been opened than he moved from Hanover to Wurzen in 1840 so as to set up a wallpaper factory there. After a short period of time, he opened a wallpaper retail shop in Leipzig and garnered international sales. Initially, he had the wallpapers produced and printed by hand using wooden stamps, later he installed steam-powered machines. In 1888, eleven machines were producing up to 264,000 metres of wallpaper a day. Schütz made a name for himself with special wallcoverings made of paper, wool and leather and also opened a flock factory and his own paint factory.
