Artist
Ferdinand Kobell 1740 – 1799
About the work
Kobell only attended the Mannheim Drawing Academy after having studied law and worked as a secretary at the Electoral Palatinate court chamber. In 1768 he continued his training for two years with Johann Georg Wille in Paris. Under Wille’s influence, Kobell adopted a drawing style focussed on the realistic reproduction of landscape scenes. Back in Mannheim he was awarded the title of Kabinetts-Landschaftsmaler. A handbook he wrote for landscape draughtsmen was published in 1784 and contained 108 aquatint etchings based on his own works.
