About the work
The elegantly turned female nude figure was carved out of poplar wood by Erich Heckel. She wears a fashionable short haircut typical of the period of the Weimar Republic and was probably inspired by his wife Siddi. In contrast to older sculptures, the artist refrains from colouring the wood here and allows the material to speak in its originality. As Heckel’s most recent surviving sculpture, it also marks the end of his exploration of wood as a material, which made a decisive contribution to the development of a rough and angular Expressionist style.
