Artist
Karl Schmidt-Rottluff 1884 – 1976
About the work
Karl Schmidt’s earliest drawings date from 1899, during his school days in Chemnitz. He developed an early interest in nature and landscape and began to experiment with space, light and composition as artistic devices.
The charcoal drawing Sonniger Weg (Sunny Path), created in 1904, depicts a path lined with bare trees stretching into the depth of the picture plane. The rhythmic repetition of the trunks draws the eye. At the same time, he captures the atmospheric light of a sunny day through strong shadows. Observation of nature, the play of shadows and graphic clarity combine to create an atmospheric image.
