About the work
This English wallpaper cites design principles introduced by John Ruskin, William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement in Europe. Their model was the world of forms characteristic of the Gothic period. Morris also reactivated historical production and dyeing techniques. He found machines useful, but felt that the workers should not be dominated by them. For this reason he resorted to traditional local motifs, transposing them to suit his own era. The flat repetitive design contrasted with the illusionistic designs of French wallpaper manufacturers at that time.
