Artist
May Voigt 1960 – 2019
About the work
At the beginning of the 1980s, May Voigt received a commendation for one of her photographs. This does not seem to be a matter of course, as her professional career as an artist was difficult at the time due to her lack of training. Henry depicts a detail on the façade of a building that had long since seen better times. This is Villa Esche, once an Art Nouveau treasure designed in 1902 by the Belgian architect Henry van de Velde and commissioned by the Chemnitz textile entrepreneur Herbert Esche. At the time this picture was taken, however, the building had lost its former splendour, a fate May Voigt impressively captured in her view of the detail.
