Artist
Ferdinand Olivier 1785 – 1841
About the work
Born in Dessau, Ferdinand Olivier was drawn to Dresden in 1804, where he soon came into contact with the circle of Romantics that was forming there. In 1811 he travelled to Vienna and joined the Nazarenes, a group of artists who strove to achieve a close link between art and religion and found their models in Italian and German painting of the 15th and early 16th centuries. In depicting the Austrian town, Olivier used a sharpened pen and clearly drawn lines, the characteristic drawing technique of the Nazarenes.
