Artist
Ernst Willers 1803 – 1880
About the work
After stays in Bavaria and Oldenburg, from 1835 to 1861 Willers lived and worked in Rome, where he was part of the German-Roman artists’ circle. That sojourn was interrupted by a commission from his territorial sovereign, Grand Duke Paul Friedrich August, who had been his patron for many years. The Duke’s daughter Amalie had married King Otto I of Greece in 1836, prompting the Grand Duke to commission a sequences of Greek landscape paintings for Oldenburg Castle. Willers undertook a trip to Greece from 1857 to 1859.
