Artist
Käthe Kollwitz 1867 – 1945
About the work
The scene of the two women in conversation with their children is a relaxed snapshot, in contrast to many of the artist’s works, which explore the themes of loss and the pain associated with it. In his diary, her son Hans recalls a conversation they had in 1926 about the significance of motherhood to Kollwitz: «Three things are important to me in my life: that I have had children, that I have had such a faithful life partner, and my work.”
