About the work
The drawing is part of a group of works from 1903 that explore a mother’s pain and grief over the loss of her child. Here, Käthe Kollwitz draws on the Christian iconography of the Pietà, in which the dead body of her son lies in Mary’s lap. The motif is rendered with sensitivity and poignancy: the body of the dead son is completely enveloped in the mother’s close embrace.
On the reverse of the sheet, the artist has traced the outline of the drawing in rough lines using red chalk.
